The Grand Béguinage (Groot Begijnhof in Dutch) is a well preserved and completely restored historical quarter containing a dozen of streets in the south of downtown Leuven.

This béguinage originated in the early 13th century. In 1998, it was officially recognised by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site.

About 3 hectares in size, with almost 100 houses, it is one of the largest still existing béguinages. The béguinage stretches on both sides of the river Dijle, which splits into two canals inside the béguinage, thus forming an island. Three bridges connect the parts of the béguinage.

The béguinage is now owned by the University of Leuven. The conference will take place in the Faculty Club, a conference centre that is situated in the old infirmary and the communal accommodation of the Grand Béguinage.

Getting to the conference venue

The Faculty Club is located at the south side of the Béguinage, in the south of Leuven. Its official address is Groot Begijnhof 14, 3000 Leuven. It can be reached on foot, by car, taxi or public bus.

There are a number of buses that stop close to the conference venue (1, 2, 318, 600, 601), often departing from the Leuven railway station. See Google Maps or De Lijn for detailed travel information. As destination, enter “Faculty Club, Leuven”.

Bus tickets cost 2 euros when paid to the driver or 1.3 euros when buying a 10-ride card in advance (at the station, in newspaper shops or at grocery stores). This card can be shared by a group of people.

Parking at the conference venue is possible.
